ANOTHER [GREAT] REVIEW FROM THE FRINGE...
Still in Edinburgh, having the best time. We had 55 people in the show last night - and everyone loved it! We also got a review in the Metro today, including a picture from the show! The Metro is one of the most popular national newspapers so that was good! Oh, but they gave us 2/5 stars and slammed me. Yeah, that wasn't so cool.... Here it is.
Girl In Box - by Christopher Collett
One of the problems that frequently dogs devised shows is the sheer number of ideas that get thrown into the mix, often resulting in uneven and ultimately unsatisfying pieces of drama. Sadly, this is exactly the case with Future Memory's Girl In Box.
At the heart of the play is a love triangle between troubled siblings Nina and Alan, who still bear the scars of a violent father, and the equally dysfunctional Matt, a svelte 17-year-old Californian fleeing from his own domestic demons.
If the company had focused more on this narrative and maintained its fairly naturalistic style, we could have been confronted with a genuinely shocking study of the cyclical nature of physical and sexual abuse.
But while it has its moments of visceral horror, such as Alan brutally beating Matt behind a shower curtain and urinating on his sister, cleverly symbolised by a bottle of beer, most of the piece's dramatic potential is suffocated by a series of distractions.
Most annoying and jarring of these is Clown, a gurning, squawking stripper who serves unnecessarily as a link between the audience and the action.
Almost as pointless is a magical-realist tale about a mermaid who swims in the filthy sea around the docks. Evidently, this is meant to echo the main story yet fails to connect with it. There is the seed of a half-decent play here but, buried as it is under a mass of undigested, mismatched concepts, it never gets the chance to develop.

OUCH.
Oh well, such is the life of an actress. Here's to more bad reviews and many more good ones!

Poor me! At least you know enough to take the good with the bad. Have fun!
Which leads me to my next question..
Is any press good press?
Who is this writer. Seriously. Just send me an address. That is all I need.
Two things I will not be good at in life:
1. Reading bad things about Emma in gossip mags and reviews
2. When my kids ever have to deal with failure (ie getting cut from the team, not winning something, etc...)
BOOOOOOO to the writer of the review. I bet he didn't make it as an actor. Seriously.
To answer your question Emm- any press is good press! Look what Paris Hilton is famous for!! Now we dont need to go THAT drastic, but you get the point. This is why celebrities "create controversies".
And Kelly- a tip for the future on how to handle any bad press about our lovely star Emma: Just think of it this way- if her name is being mentioned (good or bad) it is because she is worth talking about!
Yes you are Emm....

I support the any press is good press theory. You go girl.
Em, that's not a slam of you, that's a slam of the writing (to the extent that is a consolation).
Maybe the author was drinking? I know sometimes when I drink I get my words all backwards.....
Example: Friday night: "I swear to drunk Im not God".

Bad reviews make the man, when I first did Edinburgh back in 97 The Stage called me a wanker.
Although to balance it out we got 4 stars in The Scotsman and Pick of the Week.
Fuck 'em.
